New York City Recreation

Outdoor pursuits are probably not on the
top of most visitors list of things to do, but there are plenty of
opportunities to move your muscles a bit.
Locals head to the city's parks when the weather is nice, but nature
being the scarce commodity it is in New York, most people are forced
to recreate indoors. Health clubs of course abound, and you'll have
no trouble finding one. Major names include World Gym, New York
Health and Racquet Club and New York Sports Club. The 92nd Street
YMCA is another good choice. Tennis is popular -- think Annie
Hall. For court time, try Midtown Tennis.
While the city doesn't have a lot of
space to devote to ice skating, what it does have is quite special.
In winter, we like the admittedly touristy experiences of gliding
around Rockefeller Center's outdoor rink or the Wollman Rink in the
southern part of Central Park as the city lights dazzle overhead in
the night sky. During the warmer months, the Skyrink at Chelsea
Piers is pretty much the only option -- and a fine one.
There are more opportunities to hiks
and jog than one might expect. But if you like to do your walking on
the links, you'll have to leave the island of Manhattan. Golfers
have a variety of courses to choose from within driving distance --
Bethpage's Black Course has become a destination in and of itself.
